Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Commissioned in the Civil War as a 1st Lieutenant in the 22nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was then commissioned in the 88th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, eventually becoming its Colonel and commander. He was severely wounded in the leg during the Battle of Antietam.
